The Crafty Type

One week into school and my daughter already has to do a project on Colonial times. She mentioned a diorama. What is it, do I need supplies and will I have to help?

Basically, you're talkin' a shoe box w/ figurines. Dress it all up (we mean, have her dress it all up) as a Colonial scene. The best "craft" shop in NYC is Paper Presentation on 18th Street between 5th and 6th. Pearl Paint has a craft store on Lispenard Street. It's not so great, but they usually have the little plastic figures (like old army guys) you may need.

Payless will give you old shoe boxes in lots of shapes and sizes. A nice big one really helps so that your kid does not have to make things too tiny to fit in.

tip o’ the week: Super Easy Mac 'n Cheese

Last year Hilary bought Alyssa's daughter a cookbook and Annabelle has spent the better part of the year perfecting the cookbook's macaroni and cheese recipe. Here's her version--the first one the children like that doesn't come out of a box and doesn't involve some sort of flourescent orange substance. The topping is our own special addition...but be forewarned: you won't be able to stop at one bite!
