newsletter: Thoughts For Valentine's Day

February 03, 2009 4:25 AM Filed Under: NEWSLETTER VALENTINE'S DAY

If you never got around to sending those holiday cards or if your last name just happens to be Valentine (as in Hilary), there's still time to order photo Valentine's Day cards from Mango Ink, Shutterfly, or Tiny Prints. We've had a host of Valentine's Day questions this week so read on...

Valentine's Gifts for Boys

Q: Do you have any idea where to get Valentine's Day gifts for boys? I have seen tons of "heart" stuff for girls, but nothing for boys. Last year my 7 year old son was so dissapointed when his sister got all the cute "love" stuff, and he got a dvd.--Lisa

A: We feel your pain as we both have boys around that age! When they're toddlers, you can buy those cute Valentine's tshirts for them but we hardly think they'll want to wear those to school now! Gap has really cute heart boxer briefs and Old Navy has some groovy Valentine boxers. You could also do a custom message Valentine puzzle, a Vermont Teddy Bear (we love the one with the custom tshirts), or a fun bucket of popcorn from the Popcorn Factory. If you want to do some sweet treats, Hershey's has a great selection of Valentine treats (many are personalized).

Valentine's Day Cards

If you're looking for some inspiration to help your children, make Valentine's Day cards then make a visit to the InkPad in the West Village. It's a tiny little store bursting with rubber stamps, inks and papers. Print out a couple of cute photos of the kids, give 'em some glue, stickers, and scissors, and let them stamp away to their heart's content. Remember, if they're in preschool or grade school they'll probably need one for every child in the class so this could be an entire weekend's worth of activity. Note: the InkPad also offers classes and does fun birthday parties.

Valentine's Gifts for Dieters

Q: Any ideas for a Valentine's gift for my husband? He's been so good on his diet and exercise routine I hate to throw him off with chocolates (which I will probably eat anyway). TIA!-–Patti

A: We're thinking a box of You Bars, customized with a special message, are just the thing. Okay, maybe they're not as tasty as a big ol' box of chocolates from Marie Belle, but they're a lot healthier. And you probably won't eat them all in one sitting.

S'more S'mores

A very unkind person sent us a gift of S'more Smoochies. They are sick. Actually, it would be more accurate to say they were sick. They didn't last very long. You can order them in a variety of flavors and colors--fun as a party favor, Valentine's Day gift, or just in case you need a little some sumthin'-sumthin'.

Valentines Without Tears

Q: My son has to make a card for every child in the class. It's always a nightmare. What can we do that will be easy and relatively pain-free?-–Jody

A: We're already anticipating the drama of hand-writing Valentine's for every child in the class. This year we're doing cookies. As usual, Alyssa's going for the Pillsbury Slice and Bake. Hilary's taking it a step further and doing M&M cookies with pink and red candy. Pop two cookies in a cellophane bag, tie each one with a name tag, and you're good to go. A much saner solution than last year's cutting, gluing, and pasting fest that--how shall we put this--ended badly.

                                 --Cheers! Alyssa and Hilary

tip o’ the week: Super Easy Mac 'n Cheese

April 27, 2009 4:46 AM Filed Under: RECIPES TIP O' THE WEEK

Last year Hilary bought Alyssa's daughter a cookbook and Annabelle has spent the better part of the year perfecting the cookbook's macaroni and cheese recipe. Here's her version--the first one the children like that doesn't come out of a box and doesn't involve some sort of flourescent orange substance. The topping is our own special addition...but be forewarned: you won't be able to stop at one bite!
