Selling On Ebay

February 02, 2009 5:00 PM Filed Under: SERVICES  Q & A

I want to sell my living room and dining room furniture on ebay.  I heard that there are companies that handle ebay sales for you. They take the photos, list the item, deal with delivery, etc. They get a percentage of the selling price.  Do you know of any of these
companies in New York City?

Try Auction Pros, now open in Manhattan --they do take a percentage of the sales as their commission but it seems like it might not be a bad deal if you can drop off a whole load of items at once. No negotiating with buyers, no waiting on line at the post office. Let us know how it goes!

Maid Service

Do you know of a good maid service?

You are probably better off finding someone to clean from your neighbors or doormen. The house cleaning companies are really pricey and not very flexible. If you do go that route, try White Glove Elite (212-684-4460), NY Brite or Zen Home Cleaning. Kind of funny--White Glove uses actors to clean--hopefully better at cleaning than acting.

Pre-Natal Massage

January 29, 2009 1:05 PM Filed Under: FITNESS  SERVICES  Q & A

I'm pregnant and have sciatica. A friend suggested getting a massage. Willing to travel anywhere if it will help!

If you're uptown, try Medical Massage Group. If you're downtown, Maternal Massage and More is fabulous. They're both so good that it's a shame you have to be pregnant go go!

Make Me Pretty

January 29, 2009 10:06 AM Filed Under: BEAUTY  SERVICES  Q & A

My husband is making me a birthday party and I was thinking of getting my makeup done before. I'd like to have someone come to my house. Do you have someone?

Call the very beautiful and very talented Monique Benoit at 516-983-6515. She'll come to your home and make you look like a way pretty version of yourself (translation: not an overly made-up tranny version of yourself!).

TV Hookup

January 27, 2009 9:03 AM Filed Under: SERVICES  Q & A

We just bought a new Big plasma TV and are having a Super Bowl party. My husband was going to hook it up but you know how that goes. Can you recommend anyone?

Call Geek Squad. They're really known for computer fixer guys but they'll wire up a TV and you won't have to listen to them whine and moan.

Leather Tailoring

January 26, 2009 10:01 AM Filed Under: REPAIRS  SERVICES  Q & A

I bought the most amazing zebra shirt at Century 21 for $79.99.  The original price was $1,400.  Anyway, truthfully, this sleeveless zebra skin top (trust me, it rocks) is a bit too small (but what a bargain!) and I think it could be fixed if I could cut the armholes a bit lower, giving my flub a bit of a fighting chance around there to stay within the shirt, rather than squeezing out.

Can you recommend a tailor who specializes in leather? Thanks so much!

If you're downtown, head over to Village Tailor on Sullivan Street. They do amazing alterations on everything (including "normal" hems on jeans) as well as superb work on leather and suede. Modern Leather Goods on 32nd Street does a lot of work for fashion industry people--truth be told, we haven't used them ourselves but they come highly recommended by a friend "in the know."

Broken Pearls

January 23, 2009 5:01 PM Filed Under: JEWELRY  SERVICES  Q & A

I have a couple of pairs of broken pearl earrings. The pearls need to be properly glued back on the posts. Where should I take them?

We just posted about jewelry repair last week by Susan Kotterman, 212-486-6576. An update: Alyssa thought her fix-it guy was gone but alas he's right where she left him. Murrey's Jewelers, 1395 Third Ave. between 79th and 80th, 212.879.3690.

tip o’ the week: Super Easy Mac 'n Cheese

April 27, 2009 4:46 AM Filed Under: RECIPES TIP O' THE WEEK

Last year Hilary bought Alyssa's daughter a cookbook and Annabelle has spent the better part of the year perfecting the cookbook's macaroni and cheese recipe. Here's her version--the first one the children like that doesn't come out of a box and doesn't involve some sort of flourescent orange substance. The topping is our own special addition...but be forewarned: you won't be able to stop at one bite! [see more]
