My children's school gets out so early--any ideas for camp in June for a week or two? I have two boys, ages 7 and 9. Thanks.
Sure thing--try Mohr's Explorers (fun outdoor program), Pier 40 Baseball Camp, Columbia Lions (sports camp up at Columbia), or skateboarding camp at Friends Seminary. All fun and different options in the city.
Having some friends over for lunch on Sunday and want to serve something other than the usual bagels and lox. I'm stumped.
What about picking up lobster rolls at Mary's Fish Camp? The lines at lunchtime are famous but we learned that you can call ahead and pick up the legendary lobster sandwiches. And please, don't forget the matchstick fries that come on the side. Serve with very cold white wine...yummy!
Where is a good place to buy "training bras" in NYC? Don't want to spend too much on them! Thanks.
Try Gap Body. The XS size sports bras are super-comfortable and nice and stretchy. Lester's also had a pretty good selection last time we were there (and no old ladies taking embarrassing measurements!). Someone recommended My First Bra, but the tag line of "a helpful guide" kind of freaked us out...but to each her own!
I am trying to find a cooking and a baking class in NYC for my 11 year old daughter. Other than the CIA, what do you recommend?
Check out Cupcake Kids and Cook with Class. Both of them over set programs for tweens but can also create a special program for a group if you'd like to put one together. Friends of ours have raved about both! Oh, and don't forget about the Institute of Culinary Education, which also offers a whole host of kids' classes.
My 3 year old son and I are movie lovers and I am looking for toddler
sized, polarized 3D glasses. I can't seem to find smaller sized
glasses anywhere. The adult sizes tend to slip off of his face, which,
he pushes back with greasy, buttered hands, making the lenses very
dirty. Help!
This almost had us stumped. We couldn't find any "real" 3-D glasses that were made for kids and were polarized (apparently what you need for 3-D movies. Hilary thinks you should go ahead and buy a couple pairs of adult-sized plastic ones and some croakies to keep them on your son's head. Or, some adult ones and some duct tape!
Do any earphones come in smaller sizes for kids? The regular size ones seem to be too large for my daughter and she's always complaining that they hurt.
Try the JVC Gummy Earbuds. The shape of them seems to fit better into kids' ears and they're also squishy. Not to mention that they come in a whole range of fun colors.
I need to buy a new mattress. The choice is overwhelming, and I don't have time to research. Any suggestions?
Alyssa loves her Tempur-Pedic mattress so much "she wants to marry it!" Of course, that's news to her husband. It's totally changed the way she thinks about mattresses--once upon a time, she thought those big fluffy beds at fancy hotels were the best. Now when she goes on vacation, she misses her own bed more than anything else! BTW, 1-800-MATTRES is going out of business so try Sleepy's. Tempur-Pedic mattresses are the same price everywhere!
Last year Hilary bought Alyssa's daughter a cookbook and Annabelle has spent the better part of the year perfecting the cookbook's macaroni and cheese recipe. Here's her version--the first one the children like that doesn't come out of a box and doesn't involve some sort of flourescent orange substance. The topping is our own special addition...but be forewarned: you won't be able to stop at one bite! … [see more]
