Driving School

I haven't driven in years and I let my license lapse. Need to take a refresher driving course. Any ideas?

We know a few people who've taken classes through Park Avenue Driving School. You can do one lesson or a whole package...you can use your car or they can provide a rental for you. You can even do a single lesson or two to learn how to drive a stick shift (always wanted to learn...).

Shoe-Tying Dilemma

Do you know of any books that are helpful with getting a child to his her own shoes? Every time I try to help my daughter I end up really frusted. Thanks.

Try Red Lace, Yellow Lace. Alyssa swore her son couldn't go back to school after winter break if he couldn't tie his own shoes so she made him watch this video about 500 times. We won't tell you how it ended.

Break Dancing Boys

Looking for breakdancing classes for my son, age 5?

Most of the hip-hop/breakdancing classes around town start at age 7...but we did manage to find two: the Dramazone NYC and the JCC on the Upper West Side both have a class for that age. When I was searching around, I came across a posting on Craigslist for someone who comes to you--maybe if you have a group you can rent a studio for the classes. Lastly, Broadway Dance Center, Steps on Broadway, and Peridance all offer classes for older kids--if you have a group perhaps they'd add one for your son's age.

Where can i take a Tango lesson in NY?

Check out Richard Lipkin's Guide to Argentinian Tango In NYC. There's a Tango Dance Calendar with classes and demos listed daily along with which DJ will be spinning. Not sure what the Tango Hotline is for, but we thought it was funny. Stick a rose in your mouth and head on out.

My son is dying to take steel drum lessons. Any idea of who offers this?

Call Jah Pan. They usually perform at parties but will give lessons too. If you don't happen to own a steel drum, they'll sell you one. It's a one stop source for Caribbean entertainment.

My daughter would like to take voice lessons along with piano lessons. Where can I find someone that will come to our home to teach?

I want to learn how to play mah-jongg. I'm looking ahead toward retirement. Is there any place in the city that offers lessons?

The 92nd Street Y has a series of four classes that will get you started. You can prepare yourself for your next trip to Florida!

tip o’ the week: Super Easy Mac 'n Cheese

April 27, 2009 4:46 AM Filed Under: RECIPES TIP O' THE WEEK

Last year Hilary bought Alyssa's daughter a cookbook and Annabelle has spent the better part of the year perfecting the cookbook's macaroni and cheese recipe. Here's her version--the first one the children like that doesn't come out of a box and doesn't involve some sort of flourescent orange substance. The topping is our own special addition...but be forewarned: you won't be able to stop at one bite! [see more]
