Funky heat proof trivet that easily folds up and fits into the cutlery drawer. Space saving design in many eyecatching colors.

Knives For Sale

September 30, 2008 3:00 PM Filed Under: HOUSEWARES  Q & A

Aside from the usual spots where's a good spot to buy a chef's knife?

Korin is a tiny little shop that specializes in Japanese tableware and knives, which typically have a sharper edge and are lighter in weight than their western counterpart. Korin is a well-known secret among top NYC chefs. Don't be put off by the $6,000.00 sushi knives-they have $40.00 knives, too.

Discontinued Crystal

September 29, 2008 2:27 PM Filed Under: HOUSEWARES  Q & A

What is the name of the place that sells lots of discontinued patterns?

Alyssa bought a bunch of china and crystal from Replacements. The prices good and they're totally reliable. But also check ebay because Replacements sometimes sells stuff on ebay for cheaper than they do on their own website!

Odd Bulbs

September 29, 2008 12:30 PM Filed Under: HOUSEWARES  Q & A

Where can I find bulbs for an antique chandelier? I need those little bulbs that kind of look like flames.

We thought we were out of luck when Just Bulbs closed downtown but we just found out that they've reopened on 60th Street. They have every kind of light bulb under the sun--you can even email them a photo of the bulbs you need and they'll UPS them to you.

Coffee Talk

September 19, 2008 10:43 AM Filed Under: HOUSEWARES  Q & A

We need a new coffee maker but don't have much room under the kitchen cabinets. Don't like to grind my own beans but I do like good coffee and I like a thermal carafe.

Alyssa swears by her rather short Capresso. It's a bit pricier than Mr. Coffee but the coffee tastes amazing, uses a metal mesh filter (better taste), has a timer, and most important of all--the carafe pours without leaking and actually keeps the coffee warm for a couple of hours.

Broken Mixer

September 15, 2008 1:45 PM Filed Under: HOUSEWARES  REPAIRS  Q & A

Where can I get a KitchenAid mixer repaired if I live in Westchester? I don't want to bring it to Brooklyn or LI. Thanks!

Unfortunately, there is not a factory-authorized Kitchen Aid repair spot in Westchester. There is one in Syracuse though! Kitchen Aid does offer factory repair in Ohio and you can order a shipping kit from them at 800.541.6390 for $32.00. This includes the box, packing materials and shipping to and from the factory. They'll call you with a diagnosis and repair cost. They told us 4-6 weeks, so if you're a big mixer, it might not be worth the wait.

tip o’ the week: Super Easy Mac 'n Cheese

April 27, 2009 4:46 AM Filed Under: RECIPES TIP O' THE WEEK

Last year Hilary bought Alyssa's daughter a cookbook and Annabelle has spent the better part of the year perfecting the cookbook's macaroni and cheese recipe. Here's her version--the first one the children like that doesn't come out of a box and doesn't involve some sort of flourescent orange substance. The topping is our own special addition...but be forewarned: you won't be able to stop at one bite! [see more]
