Upscale Flowers

February 19, 2009 8:50 AM Filed Under: FLOWERS  Q & A

Where can I order flowers to be sent to someone in NJ? I don't know any florists there.

Order from b brooks Fine Flowers, a nationwide network of florists specializes in fresh, seasonal flowers arranged with exquisite artistry. b brooks only uses florists that have been invited into their network, so you can be assured you won't be sending carnations from your corner bodega.

Carnation Cupcake

My 8-year-old niece is in the hospital and it's her birthday. What can I send to cheer her up?

We just saw this roll by on the side of a bus...a Cupcake in Bloom from 800-flowers. We're not saying this is a good gift for your mother-in-law or your sister, but it certainly seems ideal for a little girl.

Bargain Orchids

November 18, 2008 5:02 PM Filed Under: FLOWERS  Q & A

I love orchids, but they are so pricey from my florist. Is there a spot in the city that discounts?

We love Holiday Flowers and Plants. They have a huge selection of orchids and will arrange them in a glass or clay pot with decorative moss. Talk to Happy....he's so, well....happy to help.

Need Flowers

October 17, 2008 12:53 PM Filed Under: FLOWERS  Q & A

Hosting the class potluck next week and want to buy a load of flowers. Which places in the floral district do you like?

Our two favorite places are Caribbean Cuts (if you like orchids and tropical flowers) and Fischer & Page (for everything else). They're both on 28th, between 6th and 7th. Drop off your children and get there early because they all close by 2 pm.

Last-Minute Flowers

Quick--want to send some flowers to my mother for Rosh Hashanah and all those FTD ones looks scary. I don't know a good florist in her area.

800 Flowers has a whole Martha Stewart collection and you're sure to find something that's not filled with carnations and pompoms. Many are available for same day delivery.

Peony Seeds

September 17, 2008 9:00 AM Filed Under: FLOWERS  Q & A

Where can I buy Japanese Peony seeds in Manhattan?

Well, you stumped us! We could not find any place in NYC that sold Japanese peony seeds and finding them online seems to be problematic as well. Tell us please why you prefer the seeds over the plants??

For The Hostess With The Mostess

September 15, 2008 9:10 AM Filed Under: FLOWERS  GIFTS  Q & A

I need a really elegant hostess gift for hostess who has everything and impeccable taste...please help.

We're thinking that hostess probably doesn't need another object to try and stash someplace. Why not send a fabulous floral arrangement from someplace unique...like the floral service from Takashimaya? Both of these stores have outrageous florists, but if you decide to go with a gift, they both have an extremely elegant selection.

tip o’ the week: Super Easy Mac 'n Cheese

April 27, 2009 4:46 AM Filed Under: RECIPES TIP O' THE WEEK

Last year Hilary bought Alyssa's daughter a cookbook and Annabelle has spent the better part of the year perfecting the cookbook's macaroni and cheese recipe. Here's her version--the first one the children like that doesn't come out of a box and doesn't involve some sort of flourescent orange substance. The topping is our own special addition...but be forewarned: you won't be able to stop at one bite! [see more]
