Piggy Gifts

March 02, 2009 2:34 PM Filed Under: BOOKS  GIFTS  Q & A

Just found out we are celebrating my 7 year old niece's birthday this weekend.  She's into pigs. Any good books with pig characters other than Charlottes Web? Any pig themed anything you can think of? Thanks Momcierge!

Look for Piggie Pie, Babe: The Gallant Pig (a great book before it was a movie), and Ace: The Very Important Pig. If you can find any of the old Freddy the Pig series by Walter Brooks (they're old but wonderful). You might also want to pop into Pylones--they had a bunch of pig things like a purse, jumprope, scissors the last time we checked.

Antique Books?

February 20, 2009 12:01 PM Filed Under: BOOKS  Q & A

I have a big stack of what I think are antique children's books. How do I find out if they're worth anything?

Hate to tell you but chances are, they're not valuable. Are they first editions? Do they have dust jackets? Are they in pristine condition? If you really think they are collector's items, make an appointment at Books of Wonder to have someone take a look. If they're really valuable, they'll let you know.

New Baby In The House

February 11, 2009 11:08 AM Filed Under: BOOKS  Q & A

Can you recommend some books for an older sibling (4 years)--I'm expecting #2 in a few months. Thank you!

Skip past anything with Sesame Street on it and look for The Other Dog by Madeleine L'Engle (author of A Wrinkle in Time), Julius: The Baby of the World by Kevin Henkes, Peter's Chair by Ezra Jack Keats, and Junie B. Jones and a Little Monkey Business by Barbara Park.

tip o’ the week: Super Easy Mac 'n Cheese

April 27, 2009 4:46 AM Filed Under: RECIPES TIP O' THE WEEK

Last year Hilary bought Alyssa's daughter a cookbook and Annabelle has spent the better part of the year perfecting the cookbook's macaroni and cheese recipe. Here's her version--the first one the children like that doesn't come out of a box and doesn't involve some sort of flourescent orange substance. The topping is our own special addition...but be forewarned: you won't be able to stop at one bite! [see more]
